New Robot Vacuum Tackles Carpet Conundrum

Robot vacuums have been promising easy cleaning for years, but have continued to fall short of Mrs. Jetson's expectations–especially when it comes to cleaning carpets. Most robot vacuums take on hardwood and laminate floors with ease, but fall short when transitioning over to carpet, leaving behind dirt and debris.

The newest version of the Samsung Powerbot VR90000, which we first saw at IFA in Berlin, is on display at CES 2015 and claims to bridge that gap using an array of advanced technologies that will take on both hardwood and carpet with full force.

The VR9000 runs on a Digital Inverter Motor that allegedly produces up to 60 times the suction of conventional robot vacuums. It utilizes CycloneForce technology, which creates a centrifugal force to route particles into a separate inner chamber.

This technology should minimize clogging and maintain the suction power. Rather than extra side brushes, the VR9000 features an extra-wide rectangular brush bar that can cover more ground in a single pass.

Also on board are tools and sensors for smarter maneuvering. The Height Performance Full-View Sensor, high-performance chips, and a digital camera help to guide the robot around small obstacles across a wide area. Additionally, Visionary Mapping Plus programming creates a complete map of the home and calculates the most efficient cleaning path—a similar solution to what we've seen from the likes of Dyson and Miele.

If you prefer to take control for a specific mess or spill, the VR9000 can be transferred over to Point Cleaning, allowing you to direct it with a remote control like some sort of tyrant. And when the battery gets too low, the Powerbot will guide itself back to its docking station to recharge.

The first Samsung Powerbot V9000s will feature a black and blue design, and a black and gold model will be released this spring.
