Introduction

Small apartments need a vacuum cleaner that is small enough to get in and out easily, but powerful enough to collect the dust and dirt that can collect even in a small space. And sometimes even the lightest, smallest vacuums aren't easy to store.

Several manufacturers have spotted this market of urban users in condos and small apartments, so they offer models that are more compact when in use and in storage. These models offer the same features as their larger cousins, including both upright and hose cleaning tools, but in a smaller package.

Compact Uprights

These cleaners are built like conventional upright cleaners, but are smaller and lighter. A conventional upright like the LG LuV200R Kompressor can weigh as much as 22 pounds, while a compact upright like the Dyson DC24 All Floors weighs in at just over 12 pounds, making it much easier to carry around. They are not lightweight when it comes to features, though, the Dyson DC24 offer both upright and hose cleaning modes, as well as a couple of cleaning tools for cleaning upholstery and wood floors. We did not find that they were as effective at cleaning as their larger cousins, but they do provide adequate cleaning performance if you don't have long carpets.

Portable Cleaners

Portable cleaners can be either wired or battery powered. Wired models need a power connection to work, while battery powered models cut the cord and can be used anywhere (a definite plus if you want to clean your car as well as your apartment).

Compact Canisters

Think that storing a canister vacuum involves awkwardly hanging up hoses? Think again! Canisters often feature a small tab on the underside or rear of the vacuum where the hose or brush can hook in for storage. As these vacs usually include wind-up cord storage, they can sometimes be easier to store than even an upright!
